CYCLE ALONG THE RIO MINHO ECOTRACK
The first in Portugal to make use of disused railway lines, this ecotrack is excellent for those who like to combine sports with enjoying nature. Islets, fens, woodland, plains and even an old keep can all be found along this 14 km track between Monção and Valença. Don’t miss the traditional boats used by fishermen and the small ancient stone constructions that recall rural riverside life.
THE WINE ROUTE
Excellent vinho verde wine is produced on the outskirts of Monção, the most famous of which comes from the Palácio da Brejoeira, 5 km south of the city. You can visit this interesting privately owned palace, where you can also sample the wine produced there. (251 667 238. Visits must be booked in advance)
If you decide to take a break and recuperate, the Monção springs, with their warm sulphur baths are an ideal place to choose. The waters can help treat liver, bile duct, stomach and intestinal complaints. (251 648 367. Av. das Caldas; 8 am -1 pm, open all week; treatments from 5€)
Start your walk from the north of the town near the thermal springs and head for the far end of the 17th. century wall where you will be able to see all the important sights in this charming town. The walk takes around 2 hours, ending up back at the thermal springs.
