The Ribeira is one of the oldest and most traditional areas of the city. Located on the banks of the River Douro, the buildings in this neighbourhood have now been classified as a Unesco World Heritage Site. Nowadays the area is often visited by tourists, not only because of its magnificent views but also because of its many restaurants and bars.
It is also the area that is most typical of the Invincible City.

 The houses are so densely packed together that they stand almost on top of each other, each one seeking out the sunlight, like plants. The narrow winding streets make the most of each bend in their quirky topography and a labyrinth of tiny lanes opens up in succession. Yet when you reach the docks area, the houses finally stop and the riverside is revealed, lined with cafés and shops and filled with a lively atmosphere by day and night. It is a unique pedestrian city area where no car dares to venture for lack of space. And the river itself is there, with Gaia on the other side. Sheer poetry ...
