The riverside area on the left bank of the River Douro is where the famous Port wine cellars are situated – an absolute “must”. The wine is transported there in barcos rabelos (literally “boats with tails” – the Port wine river boats) and afterwards matures in the cellars to acquire the qualities for which it is prized worldwide.
