PORTO - THE FOZ DISTRICT
What to See
CASTELO DO QUEIJO - SÃO FRANCISCO DE XAVIER FORT
Now a military museum, the present day appearance of this fortress dates from the Restoration. Its horizontal appearance was dictated by the artillery war taking place at the time and it is situated near the beach in a beautiful setting.
The locals usually call it the Castelo do Queijo (“Cheese Castle”) because it stands on an enormous flat rock shaped like a cheese.
FOZ
Foz do Douro is a summer holiday resort and a good place for taking walks. It has beautiful beaches and an urban front with modern houses.
SERRALVES MUSEUM
The museum stands in a large, beautiful park which is a masterpiece of landscape gardening and, in addition to the sloping gardens, also contains a working farm. It offers exhibitions and plastic arts, music, dance, performance and cinema events and is the Porto cultural centre par excellence, even given that there is a wealth of cultural activities in Porto.

The oldest and most central of the buildings is an Arte Deco construction with a large lawn in front of it, interrupted by a small wood containing a variety of trees. The contemporary art pavilion has an outstanding collection of 20th. century art representative of international movements, displayed in a building designed by the famous architect Álvaro Siza. The pavilion also has a very pleasant modern cafeteria and always features travelling exhibitions of international contemporary art.
