A VISIT TO THE TYPICAL VILLAGE OF JOSÉ FRANCO
In the small village of Sobreiro, halfway between Ericeira and Mafra by the EN 116 road, one will come across a sort of park in which you’ll find several miniature villages that portray the traditions and customs of the “saloio” region. It is an endless collection of small objects made of clay, mimicking the work tools and clothes as well as the houses and mills, as well as the women and men of these age-old villages. Children will love it. (261 815 420).
A WALK IN THE TAPADA DE MAFRA
Created in 1747 as a leisure area and hunting ground adjoining the Palace, this reserve of sorts has an 1187 hectare area, and is a very important protected area today for a variety of flora and fauna species, for instance (to name just a few) the deer, the buck, the wild boar and the Iberian wolf. Many activities can be carried out in the Tapada, from train rides (only weekends and holidays) to walking tours (with or without a guide), from dawn to dusk tours to photography walks, and visits to the falconry centre. The prices are varied. To book these activities in advance is highly recommended. (261 817 050, weekdays; 261814240 - weekends and holidays. Portão do Cabeçal, Mafra)
