ÓBIDOS
The name of this town is derived from the Latin word oppidum, the word the Romans used to call the castros, which is, the fortresses built by the Lusitan people. The town was conquered from the Moors in 1148 by king Afonso Henriques, and despite the many historical happenings and the test of time itself, it still bears its medieval, organic street plan today. Therefore, you can see a very picturesque and graceful urban landscape of little white houses with red roofs. The high stone walls enclose the whole town, and this is surprising for many people: there are still people living inside the houses and the castle today!
