Santarém is usually called the capital of the Portuguese Gothic style. At the right hand side of the Tagus river, it has always been a strategic place, and the city was founded on the top of a mountain which, on one side ends abruptly at a cliff, with a view over the endless “Lezíria” (the riparian plains area). That is the reason why one finds many medieval forts facing both the unstable cliffs and the plains that stretch towards the horizon (which is Alentejo). The slow, old Tagus, meanwhile, runs softly down below.

The Portuguese poet Almeida Garrett said that Santarém was a book made of stone, into which the history of the country had been written. Whether we are attentive or distracted readers, one must definitely visit this city.
