A pretty town by the river Guadiana, Castro Marim retains the characteristics of the traditional Algarve settlements. Consisting of whitewashed houses with colourful friezes, terraced roofs and latticed chimneys, the town is overlooked by the proud castle on one side and the  Forte de São Sebastião, the latter an interesting irregularly-shaped fortress with five bulwarks.
