FARO
Faro has been the capital of the Algarve since 1756. It had always been a fishing village but became an important port and administrative centre under the Romans, who named it Ossonoba. The city was rebuilt after the Great Earthquake of 1755 which almost completely destroyed it. A few traces of the city walls are still standing, but most of the buildings date from the 18th. or 19th. centuries.
Although it is usually regarded simply as a gateway to the Algarve, Faro is well worth visiting in its own right. It has an attractive marina, well-preserved gardens and squares and a very pleasant atmosphere.
