PARQUE NATURAL DA RIA FORMOSA
This nature reserve extends over 18,400 hectares forming a system of island barriers and occupies 60 km of the Algarve coast, from Garrão (west of Ilha de Faro) to Mantarrota (east of Cacela-a-Velha). The purple swamp hen is the badge of the nature reserve and, being one of the rarest species in Europe, it survives only in Spain and Portugal in Ria Formosa and at the mouth of Ribeira de Quarteira. The headquarters of the reserve are at Quinta de Marim (289 704 134, near the commercial harbour in Olhão). Here you can learn more about the reserve’s ecosystems and get some useful tips.
