A building with turrets which stands in a corner and was once the military barracks, then was converted into a market and nowadays is an innovative cultural centre named after the most famous Portuguese popular poet, António Aleixo, who was born here. The central grid built by Pombal radiates out from this square, whose centre is occupied by a famous obelisk. It is ringed by orange trees that perfume the air.
