MONSARAZ
CASTLE AND FORT
Commissioned by King Afonso III and completed during the reign of King Dinis, this monument has a pentagonal keep that has survived intact from medieval times. In the 17th. century fortifications were added due to the warlike circumstances of the times. Most of the town lies inside the fortress and its most interesting features include the Gothic church, fountain, pillory, two chapels and Town Hall.
PARISH CHURCH

An unusual building that reflects the transition from the Renaissance to the Baroque era. Like many Alentejo churches, it is a hall church, divided into three naves by sturdy Tuscan columns. Contains carved Baroque and Rococo altars, Mannerist paintings and decorative tiles.
