Standing 615 m above sea level, Belmonte castle secured the defences of the Upper Côa area. Nowadays the history of this town is inseparably linked to that of the Jewish community that was established there. Belmonte is also the birthplace of Pedro Álvares Cabral, the man who discovered Brazil.
