GOUVEIA BIOLOGICAL PARK
Discover the fauna and flora of the Serra da Estrela by walking along the nature trails in Gouveia. (238 083 930. Weekdays: 9 am -12 pm and 1 pm – 4 pm; weekends: 10 am -12 pm and 1 pm - 5 pm).
SKIING AND SNOWBOARDING
The Serra da Estrela ski resort (275 314 727. Winter: 9 am-5 pm, open every day) is near the Torre and has 9 slopes, 1 black (advanced), 4 red (intermediate), 2 blue (intermediate) and 2 green (easy). There is also the SkiPark in Manteigas, (275 980 090; Manteigas; 9 am – 5 pm, open every day) where you can enjoy skiing and snowboarding all year round on an artificial slope. At the ski resort you can also try mushing (driving a sledge pulled by dogs) or simple sledging and snow biking.
VISIT THE BREAD MUSEUM
A replica of an old grocers shop, a bakery, a bar and a specialist library and is a pleasant place to spend a morning or an afternoon or even to have a meal. (238 310 760. Quinta Fonte do Marrão. 10 am – 6 pm; Fridays and Saturdays: 10 am – 10 pm. Closed on Mondays. €2.50 adults, €1.50 children and senior citizens).
Take a short trip to Valezim to see these mills, which are rare in Portugal. They are still in working order and are used for milling grain.
