Gustavo Dias, Brasil, Maio, 2013
"Bom dia, Marta
Gustavo e Cara"
Luiz Henrique Mouta, Brasil, Abril, 2013

"Bom dia Sra Marta,
Luiz Lima & Anna, Brasil, Janeiro 2013

we are home safe and sound after a very delightful trip.
we found portugal to be a lovely and interesting place. the people are friendly, cheerful and always ready, willing and able to help. all the hotels were great. the food was very good as was the wine. the douro river valley was beautiful, never saw so many grapes and olives. It was particularly fun to have lucked out being in portugal when they were winning its games. a tv and crowd every few feet in the streets cheering their team on to victory. You have 2 new fans.
Your suggestions and advice were well done. (...)
I would highly recommend you to anyone going to your country. if you cover any other area i'd like to know.thank you very much.
Wendy Hurry, Australia, 27/05 a 31/05 2012
There was nothing we could fault with our trip and your organisation. All guides were very worthwhile and accommodation perfect. We would recommend your company to anyone planning to travel in Portugal.
Thank you and regards

"We are finished our trip with Portugal Trail, the car is returned, and we are in our apartment. We loved Evora, and the people at the Hotel were amazing. Thanks again for all you did, and if you need us for any references, we are more than willing .

Muntaz Moiz, Canadá, December 2011
I just want to take this opportunity to thank yo for the all the effort you have put to make our stay in Portugal so memorable and a fun trip.
We have had a feel of all the little details and beauty Portugal has been blessed with. If it wasnt for your love and passion that you have for your country it would not have been so perfect. We followed your guide book and the binder full of details like our bible and covered almost 90 percent of what was suggested. The hotels were well located and good sevice. By far our favorite one was in Evora. The food was excellent and the suggested stops Obidos, Nazare, Aveiro, Evora, Setubal, Seimbra and Belem all were different and unique. Sintra and Caiscai were our favorite.
Anyways we will be the first to recommend your services to our friends.
Enjoy your 2012 with good luck and happiness

We have returned safe and sound.
My sister had a great time and thoroughly enjoyed herself .
Everything went completely smoothly with no problems at all.
Both hotels were really good.
Thank you for organising such a successful trip. If any of my friends are planning a trip to Portugal I will highly recommend you.
Thanks a million for a job very well done.
Peg and John Mongiello, USA, November 2011
“Dear Vanessa, Inez and Portugal Trails,
I am sorry I didn't write sooner but we have now returned to the US and the last week has been hectic. We thoroughly loved our trip and would have only wanted a little more sun and less rain to have an ideal time.
All of the arrangements were flawless. From the great guy who met us at the airport to returning the car early in Porto, people, places and details worked out so well.
We loved the itinerary and the accommodations.(…)
Again, we thank you for helping make this a great trip. You were always available. The arrangements spot on, suggestions very interesting and we loved our GPS. Your materials were so helpful for ideas of places to see and things to do and we loved the pictures- knew just what to look for ahead.
We have already gotten our refund for the car and that just continues to speak to the professionalism your organization has. Every place we stayed remarked how they find you to be an excellent client and we echoed that you had been an excellent organizer for us. Good luck as you continue in this work. We will always offer our positive recommendation in your name.
Peg and John Mongiello”

“Hello Susana, (..)
Our trip was fantastic. Loved every hotel selection you made, the travel guide and all of your recommendations. I have recommended both Portugal and Portugal trails to a few people now. I cannot say enough about how we were able spend more time enjoying your beautiful country and less time worrying about travel details thanks to you.(..)

Helen & Ken Green, Israel, October 2011
Ken and I have just both returned to the real world following a "wonderland" trip to Portugal.
Please guarantee me that this mail will be forwarded to your superior or provide me with his/her name so that I can contact them directly.
My personal assessment is that this stage was perfect, there was a steady exchange of information and a direct response to our personal needs and requests. All bases were covered even in the few days that Diana was on holiday.
On our arrival things were exactly as scheduled, your representative was pleasant and efficient.
We were greeted with an introductory bag that contained every possible indication that our trip would be nothing less than successful while in the hand of Portugaltrails. The personal touch was so amazing that words cannot begin to describe. The feeling that it generated will be carried with me for a long time to come, I can only compare it to the memory of a fine meal.
The car was delivered exactly on time.
All of the accommodations were top class (…) The breakfasts were great. The staff was extremely helpful.
Our itinerary exposed us to wide spectrum of terrain and much of what Portugal has to offer. We remained with the feeling that we must return again and again.
In retrospect I feel that the success of our trip clearly reflects the personal efforts made by Diana to accommodate our individual needs and personal tastes.
From the bottom of my heart I thank you. You will hear from me further
Chitra Staley, USA, October 2011
We are back and enjoying great memories of our trip. Thank you very much for your wonderful arrangements. It all worked well. We loved the hotels, especially the people at Hotel Britannia who made us feel very welcome.
What a country. One hears about Paris, Italy but we thought the people in Portugal were the most pleasant. Everyone wanted to help, made us feel welcome and it was really easy even with our two words of Portuguese. I highly recommend more advertisement of your memorable spots but then maybe there would be too many tourists?!
Thank you again and if we hear of anyone going to Portugal, we will recommend your firm. Thanks again.
Fidel, Steve and Deborah, USA, October 2011
You and the other members of Portugal Trails could not have done a better job of planning and executing this trip. (…)
The hotels you selected were wonderful. The staff were very accommodating and in Evora, since we had an early flight, they even prepared breakfast for us at 6:30 AM which was quite nice of them.
We tried several of your recommended restaurants, and enjoyed them all.
We took almost 300 photos, and I will send you some when I have the opportunity, and yes, all of us would be happy to be a reference for you and Portugal Trails. We love your country and the people. We purchased port in Porto, and many tiles from several locations. I have already received the shipments, and they are beautiful and will provide many lasting memories of your beautiful and wonderful country.
Dear Vanessa, My name is Fidel and you probably know me as a part of Stephen Burns' traveling trio. In this letter, I would like to thank you and your company for making our vacation memorable. Portugal is the one country where I visited the most number of cities in a week-period. Stephen and Deborah will agree that each cities has it's own charming personality. Although I love all the cities, I left my heart in Porto. I can't stress enough what a charming country and people you are and "obrigados" for all the hospitality. Hoping to visit again one day. Saud, Fidel”.
Deb & Jeff Merle, Hawai, October 2011
Jeff and I are back home on Maui - with our hearts so full for Portugal, it's kind people, amazing food and beautiful geography! We can't thank you enough for putting together the trip of a life time and really with only 2 days notice!! You are amazing! It felt like you had known us forever by the choices you made for places for us to stay - each one so different and yet so special; and for your suggestions on what to do in the different areas we traveled to. I want you to know that we felt like we were really cared for by you and Portugal Trails, not only because you personally came to our hotel to meet us and show us our itinerary and (how to work the GPS - "she" was our best friend on the trip!), but also because you didn't hesitate to change our boat trip for us when I wasn't feeling like leaving our hotel so early in the morning and then your colleague Donna tracked us down to let us know the time of the boat trip had changed. It gave us the feeling that although we were "independent" travelers, we weren't alone.
I would recommend to anyone traveling to Portugal to get in touch with you and have you plan their trip. Ours could not have been more perfect - and I know we have you to thank for that. Portugal is our new "favorite" place and we'll be back. Thank you Susana - for EVERYTHING!!
Deb & Jeff Merle"
Marianne Malague, USA, October 2011
“Let me say that my delay in letting you know about the trip in no way reflects the quality of your planning. All of us loved Portugal. What a gem of a country you have and I was surprised that it isn't more prominent on the tourist circle. We met nothing but smiling, friendly and helpful people. The pervasiveness of English puts my country to shame with our limited number of Americans who speak a second language.
Our driver, Daniel, was exceptional with regard to his knowledge. He certainly held his own with my sister who is an artist and expert art historian. Your selection of places to visit seemed truly representative of the country. We especially loved Obidos, Evora, Pena Palace, and the views from Cabo da Roca. We went to a winery not too far from Evora that was wonderful (lost my note with the name). Daniel took us to the town that is known for carpets and he was very helpful to my daughter who wanted one custom made. I appreciate your prompt feedback with regard to our request for some shopping help.
(…) The Tram 28 was a great experience with regard to the old town. The tour of the Duoro valley was a truly relaxing day after a vigourous week. The visit and wine tasting at Quinta da Pacheca was certainly one of the highlights of the trip. The young lady who conducted the tour was charming and very informative. It was especially interesting as it was a small, family establishment that viewed quality as a high priority.
In summary, our trip to Portugal rates as one of the best trips we have taken. It is the first time, I used a driver and it made things so much easier and more personalized. The cars used were clean, roomy and very comfortable. The restaurants we especially enjoyed were D.O.C. in Folgosa and the Solar dos Presuntos in Lisbon. The fresh fish was a treasure. You and your agency did a wonderful job planning our trip. Your prompt attention and feedback with regard to all our correspondance was exceptional. The Roadbook was of particular help. Whenever we were at a loss, there was always a suggestion that helped fill the gap or answer a question. I was somewhat nervous planning from afar and dealing with a group from another country that I didn't know. You surpassed expectations and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend you to others. Thank you for making our trip to your country memorable.”
Don and Pauline Crowder, Canada, September 2011
We had a wonderful trip- from the pick up at the airport to our last day we had a great time. The weather was in our favour and the beaches were warm and very clean.
Accommodations were lovely and certainly were something to look forward to at the end of the day.
We will certainly have to return. Thanks for all your help.
Malka & Josh Milow, USA, Seteptember 2011
It was a great pleasure to work with you and Ines. Thank you for helping us to create a wonderful itinerary. We appreciate your personal touch and advice. They were to our likings and at times were very helpful.
Generally speaking we had a wonderful time and enjoyed the trip very much. It definitely exceeded our expectations. We liked the people a lot. Every where everybody was really nice and trying to help in any way they could. We felt comfortable every where we went and at any time of the day.The places we stayed were what we anticipated and the service was great too.We enjoyed the sceneries a lot, although we had to constantly climb hills up and down on cobble stones. It did have an advantage though as it helped us shed the extra pounds we gained from eating and drinking so much We loved the wine and the Porto and found excellent wines with inexpensive prices comparing to the states. We loved the food (except for the Bacalhau :)), and we ate in some excellent restaurants The weather cooperated with us too, so what else can one ask for?”
USA, September 2011
I want to start by saying that we enjoyed Portugal very much. People are the most friendly and helpful people in the world. I also want to note, that we were very impressed with your assistance. We were able to get assistance on a Sunday (…)
So it is clear, that we would recomment Portugal Travel to anyone who asks us about travel in Portugal.
The hotels were superb, in great locations and the rooms and service were wonderful in all cases.
I thank you again for your help on our trip.
Gerhard and Sarah Meyer Rodenbeck, South Africa, September 2011.
We owe you a big <muito obrigado > for the arrangements that matched our expectations perfectly. And this includes the change of appointments from Guimares to Porto, made possible by your quick solution to my request. The hotel was in the best position in Porto for a short stay , offers very comfortable accommodations, nearness to street cafes with their guitar and Fado musicians. A street view from your room is all you need.
Also to be mentioned is the friendly welcome you prepared , making us feel at home as a guest in your country. Obrigado!
That is what we came to experience almost everywhere. The visit to the winery will not be forgotten, an estate for 500 years in the same family, and one senses the deep rooted culture that grew bypassing the pretentious modern time. The Alentejo, with its open landscape, cork, oaks, old olive trees and blue skies remains with us.
Belmonte had this beautiful scent of pine after the days heat. Of course the evening boat trip was an opportunity to an enjoyable conversation with the likable capitao.
On to Guimares where we enjoyed the old town, rather unspoiled, lots of sidewalk cafes with the best tapas - and wines - we felt in the whole of the Iberian peninsula. Not to mention their ice creams, the best. In contrast to Santiago which saw many more visitors and the tourist athmosphere dominates. The Hotel in Santiago cannot be faulted and its position allowed easy access to everything we came to see.
Progressing to Viano do Castello. The Pousada with its most beautiful vistas is particularly pleasant and open, it immediately instills a good feeling. Admittedly it was a beautiful and mild sunny day. The restaurant : First class. So was the pool.
And now to Coimbra. The view from the university, the library, students in their black robes, seeing from above the row of professors listening to the deliberation of the candidate. Later finding your way to downtown passing the Se, Fado places and small shops selling musical instruments, shoes, garments, caffees, maps etc- a delight fast being displaced by < Shopping Centres >. May Coimbra hold on to their own.
As regards to the last day in Lisbon, an exceptional place and park, we should have booked at least one day more. I would have liked to have more time for the naval museum, offering an insight into the exceptional past laying the foundations for the wealth to come for Portugal and later the whole of Europe.
Please accept this as my personal experience only.
Donna, again many many obrigado's for helping us to experience this beautiful trip.
Best regards, Gerhard and Sarah Meyer-Rodenbeck"
Mike and Nicole Ravenscroft, South Africa, September 2011
The holiday was a great experience and both of us enjoyed it very much. Nicole took over 2500 photos - just to give you an idea!
Initially I struggled a bit with driving on the "wrong" side of the road but after three days or so I got used to it. I struggled again once we got to Lisbon with the heavier traffic. We took your advice and used the metro. The metro was something new to us - but it beats driving there and trying to find parking.
It would be unfair to single out any specific place as better than the other as all were unique in their own right.
Most importantly, I have to compliment the Portugaltrails self-drive tour concept. Should we have done our own thing, I doubt we would have seen and experienced a quarter of what we did. The peace of mind in knowing you have someone, such as yourself, there for you in a foreign place is very comforting and allows one to focus on the holiday.
Also staying in a place for two days at a time was just right. One day will be too much packing and unpacking and more that two might make things a bit boring. Nevertheless we managed to make 60% of the suggested stops and visits but thanks to the many options and write-ups, we could be selective every day based on what we felt like doing at that particular time.
I want to thank you most of all. Your personal attention and comments in the road book made it much more than just a business deal. Everything was perfect and we thoroughly enjoyed every minute of the holiday. From my side, I will always give you the highest recommendation and will canvas for you whenever the oportunity presents itself.
Please remember that you now have friends in SA and I will take offence if you neglect to visit us if you are ever around these parts.
Once again, thanks for all your efforts and trouble in making our holiday a five star experience.
Jake and Marti Manuel, USA, September 2011
“(…)Portugal is a beautiful country with amazing sights, churches, castles and the friendliest people we’ve ever met. The food was fantastic. I’m hooked on the soupa and was given a few recipes. Although it was convenient that Americo speaks fluent Portuguese, we found that English was spoken in most places. We took bus tours where available in the towns, villages and cities but most of the time we walked in order to meet the locals and experience our surroundings. I hope we have the opportunity to visit again.
Susana, you did a marvelous job with directions, suggestions and selection of hotels.(…)”
Irit and Moshe White, Israel, September 2011
We had a wonderful time in Portugal. We enjoyed the place we visited and were impressed with the very helpful attitude of the Portuguese people. Sometime we got help with only body language, but found our way(…)
We greatly appreciate the help you gave us before the trip and also in solving problems during the trip. (…)
Everything was well organized and the hotels were luxurious.
The tours were well organized. (…)
Now I wounder – Have you ever visited Israel? Come and see us!

We are now safe back in Canada after an amazing vacation in Portugal. We would like to thank you very much for your help to make it so successful.
Everything was working perfectly, the pick-up, hotels and your recommendation of what to see and do.
Thank you for the nice welcome back, the Cookies and the Port were delightful.

A viagem foi fantastica! Ja vou escrever varios reviews no Trip Advisor e mencionar voces tambem. Tudo foi de primeira. (...) Adoramos Portugal e vamos voltar por certo. Suas recomendacoes e itinerarios foram perfeitamente organizados e tivemos uma experiencia linda."
Scott and Alexis, USA, July 2011
We had a great time on the trip and thank you so much for your time and hard work in putting the trip together. The hotels were all very nice, and we really enjoyed everywhere we went. Your ideas for things to do and places to eat were very helpful. Overall it was a wonderful trip and all we could have asked for, other than I wish we would have had more time there!
We really enjoyed the winery, and the sunset boat ride in Tavira. I know Alexis really loved Sintra.
The GPS did end up working out pretty well also. It was very useful for when we missed a turn by the written directions to get us back on track.
Thanks again for everything!"
Claudia Sheldrick, Canada, July 2011
"Dear Diana, yes we are both well. Back into the routine.
We had a wonderful trip and were very happy with the arrangements that you made.
Portugal is a beautiful country and we are glad to have gotten a taste of all the provinces on the mainland. We will definitely be back for a longer period of time. Our motorcycles were a great way to explore the country.
Thank-you for a wonderful trip."
Dave Kay, United Kindgom, July 2011
Regarding the holiday, I should like to extend our thanks to you and Portugaltrails. In conclusion, I think your recommended tour (...) is well balanced.
Thank you for arranging a super tour of your country. We met only lovely people, without exception.
Yvonne Vogt, USA, July 2011
(...) We had a wonderful time in Portugal, we have very fond memories. (...).
It was very interesting, and we loved a lot of places, Porto is very charming.
The hotels were all very nice and we the kids really liked the last one, in Setubal. I liked it too, but it was a little small with grown up kids. But it was fine, the view was beautiful and as in the all the places, the person in charge was really nice.
Thanks for all the tips about the food.... we had some amazing cod. But the best meal, was the one in Pinochio, in Lisboa, the afternoon we arrived.... maybe we were just so hungry, but it was amazing!
The car was great, maybe a little big to manage in the very narrow streets, but my husband did just fine.
Thank you very much for organizing, it was a beautiful trip and your guide is really good. It must have been a lot of fun to put it together!
Next time we will combine a trip to the south of Spain and get to know the Algarve.
Thanks so much and it was nice to "meet" you (at least with email)
PS Thanks again for the welcome package.... my kids absolutely LOVED the beer cookies.... they were delicious... and I never found them in any store.... it would have been the perfect souvenir to bring to friends..."
Roberto and Carrie Laset, USA, July 2011
"My wife and I selected Portugal Trails to plan our 12-day honeymoon in Portugal. We are extremely glad we made this decision despite not having previous experience with the agency. We highly recommend contacting Donna Rumbold and Portugal Trails to anyone thinking of taking a trip to the country.
After inquiring via email, we immediately received a response from Donna. She was very helpful, took the time to listen to our preferences and budget, and then recommended an excellent itinerary, within our budget, that included a number of stops in the southern part of the country: Cascais, Evora, Algarve and ending in Lisbon. Every hotel we stayed at was charming and nice. Donna also planned for us a few activities that allowed us to experience more of the Portugal land and culture, including a hike, winery tour, boat ride and bike tour.
The level of a travel agent's responsiveness is very important to us. Donna answered all our questions promptly prior to the trip. When I fell sick on our first day, she was able to reschedule our planned hiking tour. And during the trip, she periodically called our hotel rooms to check in.
If you haven't been to Portugal yet...go for it and consider planning your trip with Portugal Trails!"
Alecha Beyers, South Africa, June 2011
"(…)Jip, we tried to get to most of them! Loved your suggestions, they were really helpful! My favorite place was probably the guesthouse we stayed in Setubal and Porto was the most beautiful city! We loved the atmosphere and port tasting! Thanks again for giving us such a nice guide! Best of all was your driving directions, we did not get lost once!!!! :)."
Anthony da Silva, Canada, June 2011
"As promised, the following are some observations regarding the service we received from Portugaltrails as well as some comments of the facilities and services we experienced throughout our trip June 11-June 17, 2011.
First of all, I want to especially acknowledge Inês Leitão for all her assistance, advice and patience as we exchanged e-mails back and forth throughout the past months while organizing our itinerary and then during our trip as well. I also want to recognize Vanessa Pinto who took over while Inês was on vacation and was extremely helpful. Indeed all of the staff at Portugaltrails, including Donna Rumbold, were very helpful and accommodating. All in all, excellent suggestions and itinerary! I have spoken highly of your service to many fellow travellers in Europe and to many of my colleagues working for the Government of Canada.
RoadBook and Travel Guide
Excellent resources! The Roadbook was customized to our itinerary, with nice little pieces of advice regarding local restaurants dishes, and specialities. Great directions and pictures were very helpful. I shared some of your tips with 3 Canadian girls travelling around Portugal who were very pleased to receive them.
Overall, we had a very pleasant experience that we will share with friends, family, and colleagues.

Robert & Denise Morton, USA, June 2011
Thanks again for a great trip! The hotel in Lisbon was very nice, they gave us a room with a balcony and the breakfast was excellent. The location is nice with the Cortes Ingles and restaurants and tourist sites all within walking distance. The only thing I would have done differently was spend at least a whole day at Sintra.
Unfortunately it was rainy and cloudy when we visited, and only had time for the Moorish castle, which along with the gardens was spectacular. Our favorite hotel was in Evora. We were greeted like part of the family and the breakfast was the best we've had in our travels.
The stops around and to Evora were excellent, we enjoy exploring old castles and towns on foot. The hotel at Marvao was a super location and a very nice room with a nice breakfast. Belmonte was a nice change of pace. The pool was great and we ate an excellent dinner at the hotel. Thanks for recommending the river view, the 4 days there were super. A great location and we were able to cover the entire city on foot. From Porto we only visited Braga, Valenca and Obidos, but they were all great and enough to keep us busy all day. The car rental went smoothly and we would not try this trip without GPS!
All in all we couldn't have asked for better arrangements and personalized service. We would be happy to provide glowing recommendations to any of your prospective customers. If you ever get to Chicago please give us a call, we would like to meet you and take you to dinner. My wife Denise sends her greetings and thanks as well.
Jeri E. Rodhes, USA, June 2011
I am sorry we didn't tell you that yes, we absolutely did get the bags at the Hotel Britannia and that we loved the contents. The bottles of delicious port did noweigh us down on our return trip - we drank them in the evenings! Thanks so much for the special touch!
I am going to send you a detailed note about the trip and how much we enjoyed all of it. I am going to write up a story for a publication called ITN (international travel news) and will run it by you before I do. It should give you some publicity and tell everyone else what a great job you did! Plus you already knew how terrific Carla is - she is amazing. We had planned a great trip and she really made it happen. My family (and I) all loved her - she took terrific care of us and we are very appreciative that you arranged to have her come with us.
Take care - and thanks so much for everything.
Susan and Gilles, Canada, May 2011
Thank you, we got home safety and easily. We do indeed have very fond memories of Portugal.
We had a great trip, thanks to your planning. We certainly commend you on your choice of accommodation. Every place we stayed was special for one reason or another and, invariably, the locations were superb. Two places are worthy of particular note: the Britania in Lisbon – very comfortable, a real delight with wonderful staff, so nice to “come home to” at the end of our travels; and the Albergaria in Evora – we simply cannot say enough good things about the young couple who run it, the positive energy and ambiance they have created, the motivation of their staff to please, and the comfort and service they provide. And an honourable mention to the CS Vintage House in Pinhao – just plain gorgeous. But, as we say, every place had something special to recommend it. (…)
We particularly enjoyed your “insider” tips in both the Guidebook and the Roadbook. Your passion for the country comes through loud and clear which really enhanced our trip and gave us a better perspective than we could have gotten from any of the big name guidebooks. Your choice of lunch stops – Nazare, Amarante, Olhos d’Agua, Silves – was great. We particularly enjoyed the roof top bar at the Barrio Alto. The bottom line is that we had a much better trip with PortugalTrails than we would have had left to our own resources.
One incident in Lisbon on the 28 tram will stick in our minds. An oncoming tram stops, and in the rain, the attractive young women driver gets out and struggles to close the window. Our tram stops and the gallant young driver gets out, runs over and closes the window with a pole customized for the job. He returns to the tram to the applause of all. Such a nice moment.
People were wonderful everywhere, very accessible, always with a smile and willing to help a stranger. And, Susan misses the little espressos (Starbucks will do a single shot here, but it’s just not the same!)
Thanks for helping us enjoy your country,
All the best,
Susan and Gilles"

We can't thank you enough for all that you did for us. Every hotel was unique and your suggested itinerary, road map helps and sightseeing suggestions were all useful. The Lisbon hotel was perfectly located and the staff even welcomed us back on our last night. Free Port wine is served as a toddy every night. The Castle in Porto was also lots of fun as well as the wine farm on the Douro River which gave us a tour and left a bottle of Port as a bedtime toddy. The Evora small hotel run by a lovely young couple made us feel so welcome. Their emphasis on organic foods and individually made breakfasts made for a delightful experience. These are only the ones that come to my mind right now. All the other places we stayed were equally good.
As I begin to put my article together and think about how to organize my thoughts I will pass on any additional information I have. Off the top of my head I will mention how much we enjoyed the Gulbenkian Museum in Lisbon. We also think that it was a cherry liquor (served in chocolate miniature cups), and not ginger, in Obidos. This info. came from two guidebooks. We bought 72 hour passes in Lisbon which gave us access to all kinds of transportation. Did we ever walk!
The rental car worked out well with Tom-Tom, most of the time, giving us good directions. We nicknamed her "Tomi" and one time on a narrow, curving uphill street with only room for one car to go up Tomi said---"Recalculating---Make a U-Turn!" We found that rather amusing.
We thank you again for coming up with one of our best laid out tours ever! The pkg. you sent to us in GA did come after we left; however, I will do some cutting and pasting from it to add to my scrapbook.
We're already promoting your services to friends who may decide to visit Portugal. We hope that we can send you some more business as a result of our great experience and your expertise!

"Ines, just wanted to let you know we made it home safe and sound though today Tuesday I am trying to get our jet lag. I wanted to thank you for such a wonderful trip everything was perfect. The hotels were fabulous and the maps and info were really great.
I just wanted to let you know that this trip would not have been so perfect without all the time you spent putting it together for us. I will certainly tell anyone thinking of coming to Portugal to call you and Portugal trails. It was a fabulous trip thank you very much. I hope you had a great vacation - Vanessa was a great help."
Audrey Lum, Hong Kong, April 2011
"Dear Vanessa & Ines
I just wanted to write a quick note to say thanks for all your help in organising my family's trip to Portugal.
We had a great time, and thoroughly enjoyed seeing your lovely country. Fortunately for us, aside from the dismal rainy day at Sintra, we were mostlyblessed with sunny days. The hotels were good overall and I appreciate you getting us the rooms at short notice.
My favourite places are Douro Valley& Guimares; and the scenery from the castle on Marvao was stunning too.
Both our tour guides were nice, very knowledgeable & made good recommendations including for restaurants/ food.
Car was comfortable & pacing was just right.
I also think your guide book was informative and well written. Great work!
If I have friends interested in visiting Portugal I will be sure to recommend your services.
All the best to you.
Ina and Frikkie Calitz,South Africa, April 2011
We are back and had a wonderful stay in Portugal. Thanks to you. We tried to do what you suggested and enjoyed it so much. I am sending a few photos.
We walked a lot and experience the down town and all the secret places.
Thanks a lot for your road book and all the info. We will always remember our time spent there and tell all our friends of Portugal trails, Ines, who did it for us.
Ina and Frikkie"

"Bom Dia, Ines
After a 25 hour odyssey, we finally arrived back home at midnight last night. We were exhausted but delighted with our exploration of Portugal. You have a beautiful country, and the people are warm, friendly and very kind. I can honestly say that we never met anyone who was impatient, rude or dismissive. People went out of their way to be helpful. The weather was wonderful, as well. We enjoyed 14 days of sunshine and temperatures in the high 20s Celsius. Since early April is usually more rainy, especially in the north, this was an added bonus for our trip. We have hundreds [maybe thousands] of beautiful pictures.
Portugal Trails, and especially you, were extremely supportive. The material you supplied was very useful and guided us through our 9 day exploration of Portugal. The rental car worked well and never caused any problems. Having the rental car company deliver the car to our hotel at the start of the trip and pick it up at the hotel in Faro was a luxury service we appreciated. Gasoline is about twice the price in Portugal that it is in Canada, but we still spent less than 150.00 Euros on fuel for the entire trip. Overall, the cost of living in Portugal [buying mostly where tourists buy] translates so that the Euro has equivalent buying power to the Canadian dollar, i.e. a Euro in Portugal buys what a dollar buys in Canada.
All of the hotels you booked for us were excellent, and each was very different from the previous one. The most impressive hotels were the Pestana Palace in Lisboa, the Convento Do Espinhiero in Evora and the Pousada de Estoi in Faro. We were given a guided tour of the Convento in Evora by one of the excellent hotel staff. There is a lot of history in these old castles, monasteries and palaces. We saw very different things in the north [Porto, Nazare, Obidos, Encieira], Cascais, Lisboa, the Alentejo [Monsaraz and Evora], western Algarve [Sagres and Lagos] and the eastern Algarve [Faro, Estoi, Tavara].
Because we come from Newfoundland, which has strong historic ties with Portugal, whose fishing fleets have always fished the Grand Banks off Newfoundland on Canada's east coast, we took every opportunity to see if the people we met remembered this link. Unfortunately, most of them did not. Most of Portugal's salt cod, which is everywhere on restaurant menues, came from Newfoundland. How soon we forget !
Ines, you made our brief visit to your beautiful country a once-in-a-lifetime experience for both of us. Muito Obrigado ! Who knows when we'll meet again, but we will. Adeus."
Irina Kourzakova, Canada, March 2011
Trip went very well.
Thank you for all your suggestions.
Loved the Marvao. It was the highlight of our trip.
We loved the suggested shortcut scenic road from Lamego to Amarante.
All hotels were very good.
We came home full of memories and with a lot of photographs.
Thank you for all your help.
Castle Family, USA, March 2011
"Good morning Inez,
We are back from our wonderful trip to Portugal. Thank you for all of your recommendations, hotel choices, restaurants etc. IT could not of been more perfect. The three of us loved Porto. The hotel there was the perfect location as were all the other ones. We ate at the two restaurants in Evora that you recommended. Both were wonderful. The restaurant at Hotel Quinta das Lagrimas was out of this world also. The car worked out fine. They gave us a station wagon. Jeff handled the windy streets like a pro. Obidos was a real treat. All the hotels accommodated the three of us with no problem. I think we sampled all the pastries of each area. Jeff said he gained 6 pounds on vacation. I think it was the wine!!!. The Knights of Templar in Tomar was unbelievable. There was just so much to see and do.
I think my daughter took over a thousand pictures. It was all so beautiful. I do not know how we lucked out with such perfect weather.
Thank you for all of your help and you can be sure we will recommend you all to any one we know who is planning a trip to Portugal.
The Castle Family"
Natalia Char, Colombia, January 2011
Just wanted to send you a note telling how much we loved the country!
It has spectacular cities and towns and the landscape is also beautiful.
The organization was splendid and we loved all the hotels and recommendations.
Thanks a lot for your support!
Best wishes for you and your team
Rod and Lyn Davies, Australia, Nov 2010
My apologies for the delayed reply, but after Portugal we travelled in Spain for two weeks and then a stopover in Asia on the way home. Back home now and getting ready for Christmas and New Year.
Lyn and I really enjoyed Portugal. We have travelled to most countries in Western Europe and truly believe the people of Portugal to be the friendliest people in Europe. Everyone tries so hard to make your holiday a success and it really is a beautiful country.
The organization of our self drive holiday by Portugal Trails worked very well. It all went smoothly and the quality and the location of the hotels was near perfect. The Portugal Trails book and road maps were very helpful and made it easy to undertake a self drive tour. I have provided an overview review of the hotels you booked for us -
LISBON - Hotel (...) situated in the old town and right amongst all the action. Great shopping in the Chiado district and only a very short walk to the exciting Baixa and Bairro Alto districts with their restaurants, bars and nightlife. We highly recommend the Premium Room with its own rooftop terrace which has amazing views of the castle, the cathedral, the river and most of the old town. Breakfast was good with a range of hot and cold dishes. And the front desk team were sensational. Always ready to help or to recommend and book excellent restaurants and shows. We loved Lisbon and Chiado Regency.
PORTO - An amazing hotel in a fantastic absolute riverfront position on the Ribeira. Strongly recommend a river view room which has great views of the Ribeira, the river, the bridge, and the port houses on the opposite bank. This is a very high quality hotel and the bathroom with two full length windows overlooking the river must have one of the best views from any bathroom in Europe. Very good breakfast with a wide range of hot and cold dishes. Front desk team and all of the hotel staff were so friendly and helpful – we just did not want to leave. At check in, the porter came with me in my car to show me where to park (a short distance from the hotel in a public car park). We received a discounted parking voucher on departure which was around one third of the actual ticket price. And Porto is a must visit city, although very hilly. The elevators and funicular ease the hills.
EVORA - After the two larger cities of Lisbon and Porto, our stay in Evora was a delight. A much smaller town, but with so much to see in the town and surrounding countryside. Again, the hotel was perfect with such friendly and helpful staff, one of the best breakfast buffets we have had and the Junior suite was large and had a very nice sized balcony. Very easy free parking right under the hotel and its location just inside the old city walls made it perfect for guests in their own cars. We did not have to worry about the small winding lanes and roads of the old town. Evora is not large, so all the restaurants and sights are in easy walking distance from the hotel. Placa do Giraldo is the main square in the middle of the town, and we easily walked there in 5 to 6 minutes. We had some of the best food of our six week European holiday in Evora, including Tasquinha d’Oliveira (only 5 tables) and Botequim da Mouraria, where only 8 people sit at a bar and Domingos serves you his specials of the day. An experience that has to be tried.
We really enjoyed our holiday in Portugal and will definitely visit again. I would have no hesitation in recommending and using Portugal Trails for my next holiday.
Thank you again,
Rod and Lyn Davies.

You have a lovely country and community.

"Ines, we had a wonderful trip! Your information along with Rick Steves' book on Portugal made it very easy!"
Jan Vincent, USA, Sept 2010
What a terrific vacation we had - all thanks to you! We did a tremendous amount of traveling once we arrived on the main land Portugal. I thought I'd share our experience with you.
Sao Miguel - was a tremendous surprise for us. We did not realize how beautiful this island is - so unspoiled, direct access to the sea and other natural beauty. It is a place I could easily live once I retire.
Sintra - was terrific and exceeded our expectations. The Quinta da Vigia is an ideal size (small) and in a perfect location. ... . We also explored Colares and Cascais.
Evora - was fabulous. The hotel you selected was perfect! We absolutely loved it and would highly recommend it. We met the owners who are very friendly and very helpful. In fact all of the staff were simply delightful. The breakfast was very delicious. There is a great deal to see and do in Evora. We explored many other places in Alentejo region and enjoyed every one except Beja.
Setubal - The quinta you chose was by far the most beautiful. The interior is immaculate and impeccably decorated with beautiful antique furnishings. It was so quiet and serene there … I also think Setubal should have been our second location instead of Evora because it is so close to Sintra.
Sagres - what can we say about this beautiful place? Thank goodness some wild places are still available because it is almost ruined by the major construction and tourism there. The hotel you selected was in a nice location, but the "private beach" did not really exist.
Although there were so many problems with PayPal before we left, I want to thank you and PortugueseTrails for planning a near perfect vacation for us. We are already thinking of returning to Portugal to visit another Azorean island and explore the northern part of mainland Portugal. If we do, we will definitely book it with you.
Brian & Helen Stace, USA, June 2010
Just a short note now that we are starting to catch up at home.
We both just want to thank you again for your help and friendship, both professionally through Portugal Trails and personally. Meeting you and Filipe was one of the highlights of our trip. It would be great it if you can make it out our way so that we can meet you again and show you around here.
We have highly recommended both Portugal Trails and you to everyone we have spoken to about our holiday.
Thanks again & fond memories

Portugal Trails provided excellent service and we would recommend your company to anyone!
Thank you again for everything...!
We are glad we found you to help make our trip to Portugal so memorable! We loved the people, the scenery, the castles, the cathedrals, the cities and towns, the food and of course the wine!! We will NEVER forget the cobbled streets!! There's so much more to tell!
Best Wishes to you and your team. We hope you all have a great summer!
“Nutrition Goddesses”, USA, May 2010
Overall, all the Goddesses were very pleased and happy, and highly complimentary of our trip to Portugal. This was the outcome of good planning with your excellent assistance, Vanessa, and wonderful execution of the tour plan with Christina.
We much appreciated your outstanding responsiveness and follow-through as we were planning our trip to Portugal. International trips are a big expense and we had many wants and questions. Your customer satisfaction focus was evident from the first time we communicated and this is what influenced us to select Portugal Trails for our private guided tour among all the other companies considered. In addition, your accessibility to us during our time in Portugal along with your proactive efforts to check in with us on how things were going helped to affirm that we would have a fabulous time and a problem-free vacation.
Maderia was a delight and absolutely beautiful and enchanting. The Pestana Promenade was a beautiful hotel and we highly recommend it. As for the tour, it was fine overall and we saw a lot in the short time we were there – and, loved it.
Portugal Trails Guidebook
We appreciated receiving a PortugalTraials guidebook for each Goddess! This guidebook has interesting and good information and it was a useful complement to the information we found in other Portugal guidebooks like the one by Rick Steves, Fodor, and others.
All ‘n all, we are highly satisfied customers of Portugal Trails and Christina, and will spread the word. And, we look forward to possibly returning for another visit in the future!"
Philippa Harland, UK , May 2010
We are now safely back in London after a wonderful trip. Thank you for making every effort to ensure our stay was a happy one. We absolutely loved it - the only hotels that were slightly disappointing was the Setubal Pousada which needs a bit of updating, and Estalagem S.Domingos which, for a 4 star hotel, did not really impress us.
Everything else was perfect and thank you once again for arranging it all.
Gary Willmes, USA, May 2010
"Fantastic trip! Will send some comments when I get home. (...) We dropped the car off today, a day early, because it was impossible to get to the hotel because of the strike today! But we finally made it and are sad that we have early flights tomorrow.
John Sweeder, USA, May 2010
Bonnie and I did have a wonderful trip. We thank you for all of you guidance. All of the hotels were very nicely appointed. Each of the cities were well chosen.
Carole/Bob/Joan/Bill, USA, May 2010
Once again I'd like to say a heartfelt 'thank you' for all your help in planning our trip and for assisting us as we tried to find one another after our airline fiascos!
As far as feedback; the services which you provided to us were top knotch! I just can't say enough about how helpful you were, not only during our initial planning phase, but in your follow-up concerning the impact of the Pope's visit. The hotels you selected were wonderful and the guidebooks were very helpful.
All in all, it was a truly memorable vacation. I honestly feel that your input made it much smoother and for that, we are truly thankful!
Thank you again for all you did for us!
Armand & Leila Carbunari, April 2010
Apart from the bus schedule around the 1st of May holiday, the rest of our travelling was OK and we made it safely home. It was wonderful and we appreciated the itinerary you had put together for us.
Armand & Leila"
Charlie and I can't thank you enough for all you did to make our trip so wonderful!
It was truly the trip of a lifetime and we have you to thank for it! I can't tell you how much we appreciate your advice and patience with us as we finalized all of our plans.
Of course, our trip went fast, but we truly enjoyed every minute of it.
Your hotel suggestions in Douro and Nazare were spot on! And if you ever have clients that want to stay at Forteleza do Guincho we HIGHLY recommend it!
We will definetely keep your contact info and pass it along to friends and family that are travelling back in the future - as well as us! We are actually hoping to go back next May for my cousins wedding and hit some other parts of the country we didn't get to see.
I've attached below a link to some of our pics from the trip.
If you ever need us to be a reference we are happy to provide one for you and Portugal Trails.
Thanks again for everything Vanessa!!

Matt Treaster, USA (16 - 19 April 2010)
We got back from our trip to Portugal/Cruise to Norway last night. Everything went fine. We were a little concerned how the Iceland volcano would effect our travel but it all went well.
We had a great time in Portugal. The hotel was very nice. The only problem we had in Portugal was with the highway toll. We didn't understand we needed to pick up a ticket at the first booth. Once we figured out the system, we didn't have any further problems. Thank you for your assistance with our trip!
Oh, one more thing.. We ate at several of the restaraunts you suggested in your Portugal Trails guide book and each one was great. Those were very helpful!
Diana Scherer, USA ( 26 March - 4 April 2010)
Our trip was great! Thank you so much for being so wonderful to work with and for helping us with everything, including that last minute hotel change. I would surly recommend Portugal Trails to anyone I know traveling to Portugal.
Thank you so much,
Megan & Chris L, USA
The first day back to work is so hard!
We had a wonderful experience. The car and checking in at all of the hotels was flawless. The directions you supplied were accurate and we only had problems in Porto & Lisbon finding the hotels but that is to be expected in big cities and part of the adventure since we didn’t get the GPS you recommended.
We absolutely loved Marvao, Evora, Guimares and Obidios. The times you planed were perfect and the guidebook was very informative and well organized.
You were extremely helpful with the entire process and were so quick to respond to our many emails that I almost forgot we were in different time zones. The service was outstanding. Obrigada for everything! We wouldn’t hesitate to recommend your fabulous service!"
Duane Rossmann, USA ( 27 Feb - 6 March 2010)
What a great country you live in! The food, wine and people were excellent. I came away very impressed.
Both parties returned home safely on Saturday night. We loved all the places we went but if I were to do it over again I probably would have not made the trip to Porto just because of the driving. However, I loved the Port tasting houses in Porto so it was definitely worth it.
Scott was obviously taken by Evora and the Pousada. He had a huge room and since it was their 30th anniversary he wanted to stay. It was fine with me. We liked Evora.
The rain was a continuing hassle but we survived.
We made a stop in Fatima to visit the shrine and loved it.I thought all the hotels were excellent. We got lost a few times but that is part of traveling.
Thanks again for your help.
Ron & Julie Fien, Australia (7-19 Dec. 2009)
We are still on vacation and in fact will be until July.
We had a wonderful time in Portugal and really were very happy with the way that everything happened so easily. (We know how lucky we were with the weather)
The car rental was excellent. I had brought my own GPS with me. I don’t know how anyone could navigate even with your detailed directions. I would recommend to all of your clients to either bring their GPS or hire a car with one. Our car was upgraded to a Megane station wagon which was a great car for 2 people & luggage.
I think that you may have upgraded our hotels for us also as they were all good to very good. Mervao was our favourite. The hotel in Porto was great except that the room we had was inside the compound – not attached to the hotel. It rained, which meant that we got wet whenever we left our room.
All in all we love Portugal.
We really appreciate your work throughout, especially when I was able to phone you in Lisbon.
We will recommend you to anyone who is doing a trip to Portugal. Do you have a connection with other companies for similar travel in Greece or Italy?
Ron & Julie Fien"
Judy & Art Levit, USA (21- 30 Sept 2009)
How are you? We're back home and reflecting on our amazing trip. It was wonderful to have all the information you gave us as well as a route to follow. We were very glad to have the GPS system and Art says he'd recommend it to anyone unfamiliar with the cities in Portugal.
As I think about all of our experiences, the places that stand out for us are Sintra and Lawrence's and Pousada de Belmonte (of course there are many more but those come to mind first). Sintra was so beautiful and we wished we'd had more time, another day, to explore on foot. We visited a place there where friends had stayed: Quinta de Capella. The grounds and inside of the inn were beautiful
We felt the Pousada was a quiet, lovely place to stay and we also took a great hike there.
Also, we thought the dining room was beautiful, especially at night, and the food world class.
Of course we loved Lisbon. It reminded me of San Francisco and I saw so many of the same plants! The azulejo museum was fabulous and we enjoyed staying in theTivoli there also.
It was clean and comfortable.
We spent several hours in the old monastery in Alcobaca and were impressed by the kitchen and by the beauty of this very, very old building and the feeling of history.
We loved the colorful fishing village in Aveiro, and the museum in Amarante where there was a show of contemporary, modern Portuguese art. We explored Marvao from top to bottom. I especially loved the garden there. We were charmed by the look and colors of Ericeira. We visited the Serralves Museum in Porto which had an exhibit of contemporary art by Portuguese artists as well as many American artists that we knew.
We bought some antique tiles in an antique store in Evora but found we had very little time left to really explore. We wished we'd had more time there.
All in all, we felt our trip to Portugal to be a huge success. We could easily have stayed longer and found much to explore and enjoy. We thank you for helping us and would gladly recommend you to our friends.
Judy and Art"
Linda Izquierdo, USA ( 14 – 24 Sept 2009)
I just wanted to thank you for planning a really great trip for us. You did everything we asked for and we had a wonderful time! The minor glitch with the car you fixed quickly. My son and daughter especially enjoyed staying in the castle in Obidos! I would definitely visit portugal again and would use your services!
I would just like to add to it how friendly the portuguese people were, how lovely the countryside and the churches . Going to a Fado performance the last night was a highlight for me! I really have the desire to see the rest of the country now and I would use your services without hesitation.! Thank you some much for your expertise in planning our trip!
Melanie Short, USA (5 – 20 Sept 2009)
We had a wonderful trip – Portugal is a beautiful country!!
York House and Quinta do Mel were both perfect – we absolutely loved them and so did my Mother.
The car rental company did a perfect job and were at the hotel at 12 on the dot! It was so nice to have that arranged. Driving was interesting! Especially on the fast road and the windy narrow roads of parts of Algarve, but we did fine and had a great time exploring.
The cruise and train and Quinta de la Rosa were all fantastic… we missed the grape stomping by a night, but oh well. We enjoyed our stay there and were happy we spent the night.
Coimbra was also great – it was really nice being centrally located like that.
Thank you so very much for all of your help arranging the trip – things went so smoothly and it was really nice to have all the accommodations figured out ahead of time.
Peter Lindqvist, Norway (21 - 27 Jun 2009)
"Amazing tour, beautiful country and great service from Portugal Trails. Congratulations"

Just to let you know how happy we were with Portugal Trails. Vanessa was tireless in providing all the details before we set off . We couldn't believe when we got your "Portugal Guide"! Better than many we saw! And for free!
Thanks for such a wonderful time!"
