For many, the Cathedral of St Mary of Toledo is the apogee of Gothic art on Spanish soil. There is a majestic beauty in the towers and profile of this astounding house of worship, built in the 13th century on the site of a mosque. If its exterior impresses, the interior is even more monumental, with over 80 robust columns dividing up the space into five naves. In the Capilla Mayor (Main Chapel), note the fabulous altar with its painted wooden sculptures, depicting scenes from the life of Christ and the Virgin Mary. The cathedral has an unmatched collection of stained-glass windows. The most surprising, in Baroque style, is El Transparente, the translucent masterpiece by Narciso Tomé, made between 1729 and 1732. The cathedral’s Great Monstrance, which is paraded through the streets on the Corpus Christi festival, is kept in the Sala del Tesoro in its own grand display case. But it is in the sacristy that works by several great masters are to be found, including paintings by El Greco, Caravaggio, Titian and Velázquez.
